The Generations Jazz Orchestra is JAZZ Nation's flagship student jazz ensemble, bringing together talented high school musicians who are ready to challenge themselves and perform at a high level.

Students will work on:

• Advanced jazz repertoire
• Improvisation and jazz vocabulary
• Section playing and ensemble blend
• Rhythm and time feel
• Jazz articulation, phrasing, and style
• Sight-reading
• Performance preparation
• Professional rehearsal and performance practices

The ensemble will feature two dedicated rhythm sections, creating a unique opportunity for students to develop their versatility in both traditional Big Band and Latin Jazz Combo settings.

Rhythm-section students will have the opportunity to develop experience across multiple styles and ensemble settings, while select horn players may participate in both large and small-group performances.

Our goal is to create an elite, educational, and performance-driven youth jazz ensemble that gives students meaningful experience, professional mentorship, and the musical foundation to take their playing to the next level.

New for the 2026–27 season, the Generations Latin Jazz Combo expands the Generations program into the world of Latin Jazz and Afro-Cuban music. The Latin Jazz Combo will be a select small ensemble drawn primarily from members of the Generations Jazz Orchestra. Students selected for the combo will have the opportunity to work closely with Rene Gonzalez and explore the musical language, history, and performance practices of Latin Jazz. Students will explore music and styles associated with artists including: Poncho Sanchez • Cal Tjader • Mongo Santamaria • Tito Puente • and others Instruction and repertoire will introduce students to concepts including:

• Clave
• Afro-Cuban rhythms
• Montuno
• Mambo
• Cha-cha-cha
• Latin Jazz phrasing and articulation
• Improvisation
• Latin Jazz vocabulary
• Small-ensemble interaction

All Generations rhythm-section students—including piano, bass, guitar, drums, and percussion—will have the opportunity to participate in the Latin Jazz Combo. Select saxophone, trumpet, and trombone students may also be invited based on musical readiness, instrumentation, and ensemble needs. The goal is to give students an authentic experience with Latin Jazz while expanding their rhythmic, improvisational, and ensemble skills beyond the traditional big band setting. 

Participation in the 2026–27 Generations Jazz Program is $600 for the full season, divided into two convenient installments:

• Fall: $300 — Due November 1, 2026
• Spring: $300 — Due January 3, 2027
