JAZZ Nation, founded by Karlos and Madeline Elizondo, is driving a powerful movement in jazz education, uniting excellence and community to elevate young musicians across Texas and beyond. Through the 2 & 4 Jazz Academy’s immersive, trade-school approach, students gain hands-on experience that forges their musical voice and instills discipline. By placing students alongside professional musicians in elite workshops and electrifying performances, JAZZ Nation preserves jazz’s heritage while igniting an enduring passion for its future—cultivating both dedicated creators and passionate champions of jazz. Through free public concerts and accessible learning opportunities, JAZZ Nation builds a bold and lasting legacy for jazz in our communities.
JAZZ Nation advances jazz education by partnering with professional musicians and community educators to inspire the next generation of jazz artists. Our innovative approach emphasizes performance, mentorship, and hands-on learning, helping students develop self-discipline and essential life skills through music.
At the heart of JAZZ Nation is the 2 & 4 Jazz Academy, which offers young musicians opportunities to perform, set goals, and build confidence. Through structured programs, live performances, and goal-setting, students acquire crucial skills for success in both music and life.
JAZZ Nation focuses on two core initiatives: collaborative jazz performances and educational opportunities for aspiring musicians. Together, these initiatives foster a vibrant jazz culture and empower youth through music education.
JAZZ Nation will recruit professional musicians to present up to 4 concerts per season that will highlight guest artists, composers, ideas, and initiatives. Concerts will be offered free of charge and open to the public and will preserve pioneers of jazz from our region of the country.
JAZZ Nation will offer seasonal educational opportunities for enrolled students through group and individual sessions. Our “trade school” philosophy combines a formal education with an “apprenticeship” experience through Side by Side concerts, jam sessions, and outreach programs.
Karlos Elizondo, an accomplished music educator with over 20 years of experience, has been a dedicated faculty member at Bradley Middle School in North East ISD since 2018. As Director of Bands, he leads the Honor Band, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, and beginner brass classes, while co-directing the Symphonic Band. His ensembles consistently achieve top honors, earning UIL Sweepstakes ratings, unanimous first division awards, and Overall Outstanding Band accolades at prestigious festivals statewide.
In 2019, under his leadership, the Bradley Jazz Ensemble was invited to perform at both the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic and the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention. Building on that success, the ensemble will return to the Midwest Clinic in 2024—an impressive endorsement of Mr. Elizondo's sustained program excellence. The Bradley Jazz program has since expanded to over 100 students across five jazz ensembles: three full big bands, a jazz combo, and a beginner jazz band for sixth graders. Under his direction, these bands frequently achieve first-place recognition at prominent festivals hosted by institutions such as the University of Texas at Austin, Texas State University, St. Mary’s University, and Palo Alto College.
Beyond his educational role, Mr. Elizondo is a highly regarded clinician and adjudicator, maintaining active memberships in the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Jazz Educators Association, and Texas Music Adjudicators Association. As a distinguished trumpet player, he is widely sought-after across Texas, with an extensive performance portfolio that includes collaborations with legendary artists and ensembles like The GAP Band, Eddie Palmieri, Haley Reinhardt, The Temptations, The San Antonio Symphony, Tito Puente Jr., Mannheim Steamroller, and The Latin Breed. His Broadway musical credits include acclaimed productions such as MJ The Musical, All Shook Up, Chicago, A Chorus Line, Ragtime, Little Women, In the Heights, Guys & Dolls, and Cabaret.
Mr. Elizondo also serves as the lead trumpet for the Doc Watkins Orchestra at JAZZ, TX, located in San Antonio's vibrant Pearl district, where he continues to showcase his exceptional musical talent and versatility.
Outside his professional achievements, Mr. Elizondo values time spent with his lovely wife, Madeline, and their two awesome children, Amelie and Karlos.
By 2015, Doc Watkins, a swinging and versatile pianist, was leading a straight ahead jazz trio that had become very popular in San Antonio. “We had developed a very large following within a matter of just a few short years and were moving around a lot, playing different clubs and restaurants while taking the audience with us. More and more people were suggesting that I open my own club because Jim Cullum’s The Landing had closed and there really was not a leading jazz club in town. I wasn’t sure at first but I had enough people in both the music and restaurant industries telling me that I would be great at this, so one day I decided to take the plunge.”
As with any jazz club, Jazz, TX had its ups and downs in its early days along with some growing pains. “Our original goal was that I wanted to open up one of the very best jazz clubs in the world. That goal soon became a bit more realistic, to do a good enough job so we could keep it open and be successful. There are always things that one does not know when they get into the business, and of course we made some mistakes along the way. There were long hours of hard work but the most important thing was that we learned from our mistakes and have always worked to improve the experiences of our customers.”
One of the most consistent qualities of Jazz, TX is its positive energy and feeling of community. “Seeing music should be a joyful occasion. We want to have a feeling of celebration with the audience and the musicians being happy. A lot of restaurants fight to survive by being open more hours, trying to get profitable through volume. In our early days we were a lively but noisy bar and restaurant with music for 7 or 8 sets a night. But we eventually realized that the way to succeed is through quality rather than quantity. Now all of our shows are ticketed, we have 90-minute shows, and the audience is more appreciative of the great music.”
